Egypt has welcomed Ireland’s approval of legislation banning imports of goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Ireland was completing the constitutional and legislative procedures required for the measure to become law.

Egypt described the move as an important step reflecting respect for international law and relevant international resolutions.

It said the legislation demonstrated Ireland’s rejection of illegal Israeli settlement activities, which violate the rights of the Palestinian people and undermine prospects for a just and lasting peace.

Egypt renewed its call for European Union member states and the wider international community to adopt similar legal and practical measures.

Such action would help ensure that countries do not directly or indirectly contribute to supporting or maintaining illegal settlements, the ministry said.

Egypt also reiterated its support for the legitimate and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

It stressed that achieving security and stability in the Middle East requires ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state along the borders of 4 June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
