Egypt has welcomed the Dutch government’s decision to ban trade in goods originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.
In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the decision supported the principles of justice and represented a responsible application of international law and relevant international resolutions.
The ministry cited UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which states that Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories have no legal validity and calls for an immediate end to settlement activity to prevent further damage to the prospects for peace and a two-state solution.
Egypt urged all European Union member states and the wider international community to follow the example set by Belgium and the Netherlands by adopting similar legal measures against products from Israeli settlements.
The ministry reaffirmed Egypt’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause and said security and peace in the Middle East could not be achieved without ending the occupation and allowing Palestinians to exercise their legitimate rights.
Egypt also renewed its call for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state along the borders of 4 June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
