Egypt welcomes the announcement by the Kingdom of Belgium of its intention to recognize the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. This is an important historic step that supports Palestinian rights and the exercise by the Palestinian people of their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state along the June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Egypt affirms that this decision, in addition to similar decisions taken by other countries during the recent period, is a practical embodiment of the broad international support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate aspirations, and the international desire to achieve just peace and peaceful coexistence in the Middle East, and a reflection of the complete rejection of the aggressive Israeli policies.
Egypt appreciates the international movement towards recognizing the Palestinian state during the recent period, which witnessed a wave of declarations of countries' intention to recognize the Palestinian state. Egypt reiterates its call to all countries that have not yet recognized the Palestinian state to expedite this step to stand with humanity and contribute to the implementation of the two-state solution.
