Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel-Ati affirmed on Wednesday that Egypt did not object building of dams in Ethiopia, adding that Cairo supports the latter's development.
The Ministry Spokesman published a statement in which he affirmed that Egypt is willing to achieve cooperation, provided that it would be through a fair and binding legal agreement regarding the filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Moreover, he explained that this agreement would achieve the interest of all sides, stressing that this is what Ethiopia rejects.
Abdel-Ati issued these statements during his meeting with the trainees from the Nile Basin countries, and the participants in the 41st course for "Environmental Hydrology for Arid and Semi-Arid Regions".
He also stressed that his country supports development in the Nile Basin countries and Africa, through "actions, not words".
The minister mentioned that Egypt's contribution to constructing dams in several Nile Basin countries, in Tanzania, Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda is a solid proof of its support and devotion.
On the other hand, the Sudanese government denied, on Monday, what was reported during the past few days about its approval of the second filling of the dam.
Also, it affirmed that it is fully coordinating positions with Egypt on the file.
On his part, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and had a serious discussion over the GERD issue.
“During their meeting today, Shoukry suggested that it is time for Egypt to reinvigorate ties with the U.S and called for top leaders from both countries to deliberate on this,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.
