Egypt said it is closely monitoring the latest developments in Yemen, warning that any military escalation could have serious repercussions for Yemen’s security and stability, as well as for the wider region.
In a statement, Cairo reaffirmed its firm position in support of Yemen’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing the importance of preserving the Yemeni state and its national institutions. Egypt rejected any actions that could undermine stability or further aggravate the already dire humanitarian situation in the country.
The statement emphasized that addressing the root causes of the crisis through a comprehensive political settlement remains the only viable path to ending the conflict and fulfilling the Yemeni people’s aspirations for security, stability and development.
Egypt also underscored the need to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy, achieve de-escalation and exercise self-restraint, calling on all Yemeni parties to engage seriously in political efforts aimed at reaching a sustainable settlement.
Cairo reiterated its continued efforts to advance a political solution to the Yemeni crisis in coordination with regional and international partners, within the framework of supporting an inclusive Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue that respects national constants and preserves Yemen’s unity.
According to the statement, such efforts would contribute to strengthening national unity, safeguarding Arab national security, and promoting security and stability across the region.
Earlier on Saturday, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed a call by Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi to hold a conference in Riyadh to address the southern Yemen issue.
Aboul Gheit also welcomed Saudi Arabia’s decision to host and sponsor the talks, which are expected to include representatives of southern political factions, according to a statement issued by his office.
