On May 30 the United States of America and the Arab Republic of Egypt held their first in-person, annual bilateral dialogue in Cairo on arms control, disarmament, and nonproliferation. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Alexandra Bell led a delegation of technical experts from the U.S. Department of State who met with counterparts from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Director for Disarmament Bassem Hassan.

The United States and Egypt have a long history of collaboration on arms control, disarmament, and nonproliferation efforts. This latest meeting marked the beginning of a formal annual process that will enable the two countries to discuss their perspectives on the risks posed by weapons of mass destruction and how to reduce those risks.

Describing the friendly and constructive discussions, Ms. Bell said, “The United States was grateful to have had such a candid and thorough discussion with Egypt, a country that shares our deep interest in strengthening the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the global arms control, disarmament, and nonproliferation regime as a whole.”
