Egypt welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to cancel planned military strikes against Iran and called for efforts to capitalize on the opportunity to reach a comprehensive agreement between Washington and Tehran, according to a statement issued late on Thursday.

The Egyptian government said it viewed Trump's announcement with "great relief" and expressed hope that the current diplomatic opening would lead to a settlement of outstanding issues between the United States and Iran.

Cairo said a final agreement could help end the current conflict and pave the way for a new phase of regional stability based on dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes rather than military confrontation.

Egypt added that it would continue, under the directives of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to work closely with regional and international partners to reduce tensions and promote dialogue aimed at addressing the concerns of all parties involved.

The statement reiterated Egypt's position that the security concerns of countries in the region, particularly the Gulf states, must be taken into account, stressing the importance of respecting their sovereignty and refraining from interference in their internal affairs. Egypt also renewed its condemnation of any threats to Gulf security, describing it as closely linked to Egypt's national security and regional stability.

Cairo further expressed hope that an end to hostilities involving Iran would allow the international community to refocus attention on the humanitarian and security situation in the Palestinian territories, including Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Egypt called for accelerated efforts to implement the second phase of Trump's peace initiative for the region.
