On Tuesday, Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hany Sweilem met with Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Egypt Chitose Noguchi to discuss enhancing joint cooperation in water resource management and climate change adaptation.

The meeting addressed the importance of advancing joint efforts, particularly in climate resilience and early warning systems for climate-related hazards.

During the meeting, Sweilem hailed the strong partnership between the ministry and UNDP, stressing the need for continued coordination to support national adaptation strategies and build on Egypt’s efforts to address climate challenges in the water sector.

In turn, Noguchi reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Egypt, emphasizing the importance of implementing integrated, actionable projects that enhance climate adaptation and deliver tangible results on the ground.

According to the cabinet, they discussed progress on key joint initiatives, including the “Enhancing Climate Change Adaptation in the North Coast and Nile Delta” project, funded by the Green Climate Fund with a grant of $31.4 million. The project has delivered critical outputs such as sea-level rise risk mapping, flood risk assessments, coastal monitoring systems, and an integrated coastal zone management plan for Egypt’s northern coastline.

They also reviewed developments in the “Desalination Using Renewable Energy for Agricultural Purposes” project, launched in 2023 in partnership with UNDP, alongside ongoing efforts to mobilize funding through engagement with international financial institutions and development partners.
