Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat held talks on Sunday with Mark Bryson Richardson, the United Kingdom's Ambassador to Egypt, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in renewable energy, electricity infrastructure, investment, and technology transfer.
The meeting, held at the ministry's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, focused on increasing the participation of British companies in Egypt's power sector, particularly in renewable energy projects, electricity transmission and distribution network upgrades, battery energy storage systems, and the deployment of advanced clean energy technologies.
Esmat said Egypt and the United Kingdom share strong bilateral ties and stressed the importance of creating new opportunities for British companies operating in renewable and clean energy sectors, in line with Egypt's national energy transition strategy aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and expanding the use of renewable resources.
The minister said the electricity sector is implementing an ambitious program to localize the manufacturing of equipment used in solar and wind power projects, while continuing to strengthen the national electricity grid and develop energy storage projects.
He reaffirmed the government's target of increasing renewable energy's share of Egypt's electricity generation mix to 45% by 2028, describing grid expansion and storage capacity as critical components of the country's long-term energy strategy.
Esmat also highlighted the potential for cooperation with the United Kingdom on solar energy projects designed to supply electricity to remote communities, as well as joint training programs and technical knowledge exchange. He emphasized that private-sector participation remains a cornerstone of Egypt's strategy for delivering major energy projects.
The minister said the government continues to prioritize the electricity sector as a key driver of sustainable development and economic growth, supporting industrial, agricultural, and urban development while capitalizing on Egypt's abundant solar and wind resources.
He added that recent policy measures have been designed to improve the investment climate and encourage greater private-sector involvement, with continued cooperation with British companies expected to attract additional investment into Egypt's clean energy sector.
On his part, Ambassador Richardson praised the expertise and capabilities of Egypt's electricity sector and reaffirmed the United Kingdom's commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, noting growing interest among British companies in investing in Egypt's renewable energy market.
