Egypt and the UK have developed a political call for action at the UN Climate Change Summit. The two countries are calling on global leaders to join them in taking immediate action to protect people, economies and the environment against the increasing impacts of climate change.

Egyptian Minister of Environment Yasmin Fouad and the UK Secretary of State for International Development Alok Sharma have jointly presented the declaration, which provides a strategic framework for enhancing resilience and adaptation to climate changes.

The declaration seeks to raise the profile of resilience and adaptation in a world where climate impacts are increasing.

British Ambassador to Egypt Sir Geoffrey Adams said: “The global community needs to act now to respond to immediate climate changes. This declaration urges governments, the private sector, civil society, and international organisations to work together to adapt to climate change, and to protect the most vulnerable members of society.”

The UK has won the bid to host the 26th Conference of the Parties, known as COP26, in partnership with Italy. The conference will bring together over 30,000 delegates from around the world, including climate experts, business leaders and citizens to agree ambitious action to tackle climate change.

The 74th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 74) is set to kick off on 24 September 2019 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The theme of the general debate will be, ‘Galvanizing multilateral efforts for poverty eradication, quality education, climate action and inclusion.”

Egypt is participating in the session in the presence of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, carrying an agenda full of important international, regional and national issues.

The State Information Service SIS said that since El Sisi, assumed power in 2014, he was keen to regularly attend all meetings of the UN General Assembly, thus becoming the first Egyptian president to attend six consecutive summits of the UNGA.
