On Wednesday, the National Tunnels Authority confirmed that the construction works of the 6th of October Monorail project would be completed only within two years in a step considered to be a qualitative boost to the transportation field.
In a statement, the Authority said that the Giza’s 6th of October city monorail is set to extend over a length of 42 km, compromising 12 stations linking the cities of Sheikh Zayed, 6th of October and the areas of North Giza, stating that it is planned to complete the project and open it to the public at the beginning of 2023.
It also noted that Bombardier Inc. will take over the management and operation tasks of the project for a period of 15 years in exchange for a fixed annual financial fee, without interfering in setting the price of tickets.
According to sources, the Egyptian government, represented by the Ministry of Transport, will be responsible for setting the price of the Monorail ticket, while the French company's role will be limited to providing recommendations on the price of the ticket, proposals that will increase the project’s revenues after its operation to the public.
The monorail projects are special for being swift, modern, safe, and environmental-friendly. This would contribute to achieving sustainable development in eastern and western Cairo, as part of Egypt’s 2030 vision.
The transportation sector is vital to Egypt for being a critical path for urban and economic development and as they help create direct and indirect job opportunities during the implementation of the project and also permanent jobs during the operation stage.
The monorail project also aims to save fuel consumption, reduce pollution, ease traffic congestion in main roads and axes and attract citizens to use public transportation means instead of private cars.
