Egypt to Pilot QR Code Electronic Visa System in August

Egypt will begin a pilot rollout of an electronic visa system using QR code technology in August, as part of a broader government initiative to simplify entry procedures for international visitors and strengthen the country's appeal as a tourism destination.

The announcement was made during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Sunday to review measures aimed at facilitating tourist arrivals and boosting Egypt's competitiveness in the global tourism market.

The new system is designed to accelerate immigration procedures by allowing travelers to obtain and present a QR code-based electronic visa, reducing processing times upon arrival at Egyptian ports of entry and improving the overall visitor experience.

Madbouly said tourism remains one of the pillars of Egypt's economy and continues to receive strong government support due to its significant growth potential. He added that the government is pursuing a comprehensive strategy to create a more attractive environment for international visitors.

As part of that strategy, Egypt is seeking to substantially increase inbound tourist arrivals by expanding incentives for airlines and tour operators, increasing hotel capacity to accommodate higher visitor numbers, and broadening the list of countries whose citizens are eligible to obtain visas on arrival at Egyptian airports.

Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy said the QR code-based e-visa system will enter its pilot phase in August, adding that the initiative is expected to speed up entry procedures and enhance travelers' experience from the moment they arrive in Egypt.

The ministry, in coordination with relevant government agencies, is also continuing efforts to simplify entry requirements and provide a more seamless travel experience for international visitors, Fathy said.

He added that the government is reviewing the list of countries eligible for visas on arrival and those covered by Egypt's electronic visa program, while working to expand eligibility and reduce visa processing times.

Civil Aviation Minister Sameh El Hefny said the Ministries of Civil Aviation and Tourism are coordinating preparations for the pilot launch, including training airport personnel on the operation of the new digital visa system.
