The Egyptian government is preparing to roll out an incentive-based initiative to accelerate the shift toward solar energy, marking a move from consumption rationalization to the adoption of sustainable alternatives, according to Egypt’s Cabinet.

The initiative, directed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, is part of broader efforts to enhance Egypt’s international standing in adopting environmentally friendly policies and expanding renewable energy use.

Government officials said the program aims to transform industrial and commercial facilities from pure energy consumers into active contributors to the national energy mix. By encouraging on-site solar generation, the initiative is expected to ease pressure on the national grid and improve overall supply stability.

They estimate that if solar energy accounts for up to 25% of consumption across key sectors, it would significantly reduce strain on electricity distribution networks.

The government plans to prioritize large-scale consumers in the initial phase, including factories, commercial malls, residential compounds and agricultural projects. These sectors are seen as best positioned to deploy solar systems due to their available space and financial capacity, enabling faster economic returns through powering operations such as irrigation, lighting and production processes.

To streamline implementation, the government is considering enhanced coordination mechanisms among relevant ministries, including electricity, industry, environment and trade, to avoid bureaucratic delays and ensure adherence to a defined timeline.

The initiative aligns with Egypt’s long-term energy strategy under Egypt Vision 2030, which targets generating 42% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Officials added that supportive measures—such as customs and tax exemptions, along with concessional financing—are expected to boost investment attractiveness and help build a strong domestic market for solar energy components.
