Egypt will begin operating the first phase of its electricity interconnection with Saudi Arabia, with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts, ahead of the summer peak season, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.

The government is counting on the project to help stabilise the national grid and support an emergency plan to secure electricity supplies as demand rises during the hotter months.

The link is expected to deliver mutual benefits by taking advantage of differing peak demand periods in the two countries, allowing more efficient use of generation capacity and reducing fuel consumption, officials have said.

Egypt also sees the project as a step toward creating a regional electricity market and part of a broader plan to build an integrated power network linking Africa, Asia and Europe.

The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has said the interconnection will help improve service quality and grid stability, while supporting greater use of renewable energy and more efficient operation of power plants.

The project forms part of Egypt’s wider strategy to strengthen energy security and expand regional cooperation in the power sector.
