The Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced plans to introduce a specialized mobile SIM card for children, marking a major step in parental control over minors’ mobile and online activities.
The initiative was revealed during a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Communications and Information Technology, chaired by MP Ahmed Badawi, which convened to discuss student perspectives on regulating children’s use of social media platforms.
Mohamed Shamroukh, Chairman of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), explained that the new SIM card is in its final technical and trial phases and will soon be commercially launched across all four mobile operators active in the country.
When asked whether the card would be available within a month, Minister of Communications Raafat Hindi confirmed: “Yes, the children’s SIM will be launched within 60 days at most.”
The ministers emphasized the importance of parental monitoring, noting that the new SIM card will allow families to better control children’s mobile and internet use. The program is expected to include features for safe internet access, call restrictions, and app management, aligning with Egypt’s broader efforts to regulate minors’ digital interactions.
Mohamed Ibrahim, official spokesperson for the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), provided further details on the upcoming launch of a mobile SIM card designed specifically for children, set to roll out commercially within 60 days.
Speaking on the television program, Ibrahim explained that the SIM card aims to ensure parents can monitor and control what children access on their mobile devices. The card will offer age-appropriate internet content, including educational games and safe, child-friendly applications.
“The world of children is rapidly evolving,” Ibrahim said, “and our technical teams are working to ensure content management is flexible and straightforward. Parents will be able to add or remove applications and websites according to their child’s safety and digital well-being.”
Industry experts anticipate that the children-focused SIM card will set a precedent in the region, providing a safer mobile experience for minors while giving parents greater oversight. The rollout also underscores Egypt’s push to modernize telecom services and integrate digital safety measures for younger users.
The official launch is expected within the next two months, making this one of the first large-scale implementations of child-specific mobile connectivity in the region.
