The Egyptian Authority for Medical Unified Procurement (UPA) announced on Wednesday that it expected to get 20 million doses of Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine in the upcoming months under its contract with Russia's sovereign wealth fund.

The announcement came during a special meeting held by Egypt's Cabinet. The special meeting was called to talk about the UAP and Cabinet's handling of the issue of the pandemic.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by the National Medical Council, the head of the UAP Bahaa El-Dean Zeidan revealed: "Egypt are in discussions with the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) to import the vaccine until the end of 2021."

"Egypt's total commitment contracted from RDIF is 20 million doses," the statement added.

According to an official statement on May 25 by Egypt’s Ministry of Health, Minister Hala Zayed mentioned that pharmaceutical private firms will be allowed to manufacture vaccines that are 90% safe and effective.

It's worth noting that the Egyptian authorities had officially confirmed 248,078 coronavirus cases including 14,441 deaths as of Tuesday.
