Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Dr. Assem Al-Gazzar inspected on Sunday the ministry’s project to convert Abu Rawash wastewater treatment from primary to advance, in addition to expanding the plant.
The Minister was accompanied with a number of senior officials at the ministry’s affiliated Water and Wastewater department.
He added that Abu Rawash plant will serve 9 million persons, noting that it will be Egypt's second largest wastewater treatment plant after Al-Jabal Al-Asfar.
Al-Gazzar added that the expansion project aims to raise the capacity of the plant by 400,000 cubic metres per day to 1.6 million cubic metres daily with a total cost of EGP 7 billion.
It is noteworthy that Abu Rawash plant currently receives about 80% of Giza City wastewater (current City population is estimated as 5.3 million), treats this raw wastewater to primary treated wastewater then disposes it directly into Barakat drain then to other drains and eventually finds its way to Rashid Branch of the River Nile.
The Sustainable Development of Abu Rawash Wastewater Treatment Plant (ARWWTP) aims to protect the environment and water resources from pollution and to reduce health risks due to discharge of untreated wastewater to the drains and canals and enhance water re-use.
The project is aligned to Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy: 2030 Vision, its current five-year Macroeconomic Framework and Strategy (MFS FY14/15-FY18/19), and the Cabinet’s comprehensive reform program
