Egypt has taken over the presidency of the AU’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) starting October 1 as announced by Mohamed Gad, the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Ethiopia and its Permanent Representative to the African Union.
The Permanent Representative underscored that Egypt's presidency is focused on enhancing the Council's capacity to uphold peace, security, and stability while addressing the various security and development challenges confronting the African continent.
As stated on the cabinet's website, Gad indicated that this leadership transition occurs amidst increasing regional and international security challenges, which require cooperative efforts and open dialogue to effectively address these issues through a comprehensive strategy aimed at promoting stability and security throughout Africa, in line with the goals of the African Union's Development Agenda 2063.
Gad further mentioned that during Egypt's presidency, a range of activities will be organized, starting with a visit from the Council to Cairo for an interactive meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration to deliberate on peace and security issues affecting the continent.
He also pointed out that the Peace and Security Council, under Egypt's leadership, will visit Port Sudan, marking the first such visit since the onset of the Sudanese crisis on April 15, 2023, which reflects Egypt's dedication to supporting the Sudanese people and their governmental institutions.
