Egypt is reviewing a list of government projects to be delayed or slowed as part of an austerity drive aimed at cutting petroleum consumption and easing pressure on the state budget, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said.
According to a statement recently issued by the Cabinet, Mostafa Madbouly chaired a meeting with several key ministers in the New Administrative Capital, where he said the government was reassessing projects slated for postponement to ensure more efficient use of energy resources amid current economic challenges.
Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir said 20 road projects had been selected for deferral based on set criteria, while projects nearing completion and those of strategic importance would continue.
Housing Minister Randa El-Menshawy said her ministry was committed to implementing the postponement plan, which is intended to reduce the import bill during a period of global uncertainty.
Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi said efforts were under way to secure fuel supplies for both economic activity and household consumption, while measures to curb usage were being enforced.
He added that authorities were closely monitoring implementation to reduce reliance on imports and contain fiscal pressures.
Madbouly instructed ministers to establish a permanent coordination mechanism to track the impact of the measures, saying the steps were meant to reprioritise spending without disrupting essential services or the country’s development plans.
