Egypt is intensifying efforts to build a secure digital environment and combat cybercrime through continued investment in digital transformation and institutional development, Justice Minister Mahmoud El Sherif said on Monday.

Speaking at an international conference on cybercrime and emerging digital threats, El Sherif said the Ministry of Justice has undertaken a range of measures to modernize its systems and strengthen capacity-building initiatives in response to the growing challenges posed by digital crime.

Among those efforts is the establishment of the Egyptian-African Center for the Prevention and Combating of Cybercrime, created in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), he said.

El Sherif noted that cybercrime has become an increasingly complex global challenge, requiring stronger international cooperation, particularly as digital technologies and artificial intelligence continue to evolve rapidly.

Conference participants discussed a range of issues, including emerging cyber threats, electronic evidence, online criminal activity, and mechanisms to improve coordination among countries to enhance cybersecurity and support criminal justice systems.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Justice in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Council of Europe, and the British University in Egypt, bringing together experts and officials to examine strategies for addressing the evolving landscape of cybercrime.

Egypt has been expanding its digital transformation agenda in recent years while seeking to strengthen legal and institutional frameworks aimed at safeguarding cyberspace and improving international cooperation in combating digital crimes.
