Egypt Spends EGP 23.5 Bln on Slums Development

Khaled Siddiq, Director of the Slum Development Fund said that Egypt's total spending on slums and degraded housing reached EGP 23.5 billion since 2016.

Siddiq said on Thursday that about EGP 6.5 billion were spent during the period from June to January 2020.

He explained that the estimated plan for the development projects amounts to EGP 31 billion , and the remaining amount is expected to be pumped during the current year.

The Executive Director indicated that all insecure areas will be completed by the end of 2020.

Seddiq stated that the unsafe areas are to be completed by the end of 2020, also as the number of units targeted for implementation increased to 221 instead of 200.

He emphasized that the fund has so far completed more than 180,000 units under the slum development plan.

last July, the Minister of Housing and Urban Utilties Asem El-Gazzar stated that the number of unsafe areas in Egypt are 357, with 221.6 housing units. Up to 192 areas have been completed so far, and another 165 areas are currently being developed.

El-Gazzar pointed out that the number of unplanned areas at the state level are 70, on an area of ​​152,000 feddans, 52 of which have been completed, and another 18 areas are under development.

The minister pointed out that the number of random markets at the state level are 1105, comprising 306.31 market units, where the development of 18 markets has been completed, and 22 others are being developed.
