President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is expected to take part in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games hosted by the Republic of China on Friday, according to Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady.
President Sisi departed Cairo on Thursday for the People’s Republic of China to attend the opening ceremony of the 24th Winter Olympic Games, which will be held in Beijing on the 4th of February.
“Sisi’s participation in this huge global sporting event comes at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, in light of the close and strategic relations between Egypt and China,” said Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady.
During Sisi's visit to China, summit talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping will be held to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations that have witnessed a breakthrough in recent years at all levels
These talks aim to achieve the common interests of the two friendly countries and their peoples. Furthermore, consultations and mutual coordination on several regional and international files of common interest will be resumed.
The mascot for the Winter Olympics is Bing Dwen Dwen -- a panda dressed in a full-body "shell" made out of ice -- and Shuey Rhon Rhon for the Paralympics, a Chinese lantern child, according to CNN.
Lots of surrounding streets are blocked off around the Beijing National Stadium, commonly referred to as The Bird's Nest, which will host the curtain raiser.
Nearly 3,000 athletes will compete in 15 disciplines across 109 events. Some events, like the curling and luge have already begun.
Less than seven months after the conclusion of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, it is time for the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The quick turnaround is due to the postponement of the Tokyo Games caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which pushed the event from the summer of 2020 to 2021. Now, the regularly scheduled Winter Olympics are set to commence.
The 2022 Olympics will be historic for Beijing, as it will soon become the first city to ever host the Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics. The Chinese capital hosted the Olympics back in 2008 and the Games were highlighted by one of the most mesmerizing Opening Ceremonies in recent memory.
