Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said its diplomatic efforts had led to the release and repatriation of hundreds of Egyptian nationals detained abroad in connection with irregular migration cases.
In a statement, the ministry said 508 Egyptians detained in Tripoli between January and the end of April 2026 had been released and returned home in coordination with Libyan authorities.
It added that a further 871 Egyptian nationals detained in Benghazi over irregular migration-related cases during the same period were also released and repatriated.
The ministry said it had continued to monitor incidents involving migrant boats carrying Egyptian nationals that sank in the Mediterranean region.
Between January and April 2026, the remains of 94 victims were returned to Egypt, in addition to five other sets of remains identified through DNA testing after bodies were recovered off the coast of Tunisia.
The ministry renewed its warning against irregular migration and urged citizens not to fall victim to false promises made by human smuggling networks.
It also called on Egyptians travelling abroad to comply with entry regulations in neighbouring countries, including obtaining valid visas and officially documented employment contracts.
