Egypt's Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel Atty, received South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Mr. Ronald Lamola, on Thursday, November 14, in Cairo.
The two ministers held the first round of political consultations between the foreign ministries of Egypt and South Africa, based on the directives of the political leadership in both countries and according to the recommendations of the 10th Joint Committee session held in May 2024.
These consultations aim to unify visions and coordinate positions on current regional and international challenges.
During the political consultations, both ministers praised the depth of the historical relations between Egypt and South Africa and expressed their aspirations for further cooperation in various fields.
Furthermore, they emphasized the need to enhance economic and trade relations between the two countries in a way that reflects their standing and capabilities within the African continent, and to establish a mechanism to follow up on the outcomes of the 10th Joint Committee session, ensuring continued coordination to achieve mutual interests.
The consultations included discussions on regional and international situations of common interest. Both sides emphasized the importance of continued cooperation to address the current challenges in the Middle East and Africa.
Moreover, the ministers exchanged views on African Union-related issues and ways to enhance integration among African nations.
Discussions also covered developments in Gaza, Sudan, Libya, the Horn of Africa, Southern Africa, the Central Lakes Region, and water security.
Regarding the situation in Gaza, both ministers addressed Egypt’s mediation efforts for an immediate ceasefire and recent developments in the legal proceedings at the International Court of Justice against blatant Israeli violations in Gaza.
At the conclusion of the consultations, both sides signed a joint bilateral statement, followed by a press conference with the foreign ministers of both countries.
