As part of his official visit to Rwanda, Hani Sewilam, Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, and Bernadette Irakoze, Rwanda’s Minister of Environment, presided over the closing session of the Joint Steering Committee for the Water Resources and Irrigation Management Project.
During the ceremony, the ministers witnessed the signing of the executive action plan outlining the implementation of the provisions of the bilateral memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two countries.
The event was attended by Aref Gharib, Head of the Nile Water Affairs Sector, Dr. Emmanuel Rukunda, Director General of the Rwandan Water Resources Board, Hanan Shaheen, Egypt’s Ambassador to Rwanda, as well as representatives, experts, and technicians from both countries and the Egyptian Embassy in Kigali.
Over the two-day committee meetings, participants reviewed the proposed action plan, discussed future steps under the MoU, and conducted field visits to proposed project sites to assess conditions on the ground and engage key stakeholders on how to move forward.
The bilateral MoU was originally signed during the Rwandan President’s visit to Egypt on 23 September 2025, aiming to implement development projects addressing Rwanda’s water needs. These include watershed protection projects to ensure sustainability and water quality, construction of wells and rainwater-harvesting dams to provide safe drinking water for citizens and livestock, training and capacity-building programs in water resources management, as well as knowledge and expertise exchange between Egyptian and Rwandan experts
