Egypt’s Minister of Supply Sherif Farouk held talks with major Russian grain industry officials this week as Egypt seeks to deepen strategic cooperation with Russia in food security and grain logistics.
The meetings took place on the sidelines of the Fifth Russian Grain Forum in Sochi, where Farouk participated as a guest of honour from May 20 to 23.
Farouk met with Alexey Grebanov, chief executive of Demetra Holding, one of Russia’s largest grain trading and logistics firms and a key exporter of Russian grain to global markets, including Egypt.
The discussions focused on expanding cooperation beyond traditional wheat supply agreements toward broader strategic investment partnerships, according to the Egyptian Supply Ministry.
Both sides highlighted the strength of Egyptian-Russian economic ties, particularly in food security, with Russia remaining one of Egypt’s main wheat suppliers.
The talks also explored plans to diversify supply sources, upgrade grain storage and transportation infrastructure and establish a regional logistics hub for grain trade and storage at Egyptian ports.
According to the Ministry of Supply, the proposed hub could evolve into an integrated regional centre incorporating value-added industries such as flour and pasta production, as well as edible oil and animal feed manufacturing.
The discussions reflect Egypt’s broader strategy to strengthen partnerships with major international grain suppliers and ensure stable access to essential commodities amid continued volatility in global food markets.
