Egypt has released 1,214 inmates from correctional and rehabilitation centres under a presidential pardon marking the anniversary of the 23 July Revolution.
The Ministry of Interior’s Community Protection Sector formed committees across the country to review inmates’ files and determine who met the conditions for release.
The review concluded that the presidential decision applied to 1,214 inmates, who were granted pardons from the remainder of their sentences.
The Interior Ministry said the move formed part of its efforts to apply a modern penal policy, provide inmates with different forms of care and support the reintegration of rehabilitated prisoners into society.
