Egypt has reiterated its firm rejection of unilateral actions in the Eastern Nile Basin that violate international law, stressing that such measures undermine cooperation and threaten regional stability.

The stance was outlined during a meeting between Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration Badr Abdelatty, who discussed coordination between their ministries on regional and international water issues.

In a joint statement, the ministers said Egypt continues to closely monitor developments in the Nile Basin and will take all necessary steps, in line with international law, to safeguard its water security. They emphasized Cairo’s commitment to dialogue and cooperation with Nile Basin countries to achieve mutual benefits and sustainable development.

The meeting also highlighted Egypt’s longstanding support for development projects in Nile Basin states, particularly in the southern basin. Officials pointed to a newly established $100 million financing Mechanism aimed at supporting studies and infrastructure projects in those countries, complementing efforts by the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development and the Egyptian Initiative for the Development of Nile Basin States.

Egypt has implemented a range of water-related projects across several African countries, including South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Sudan. These projects include solar-powered groundwater stations, river ports, reservoirs, early warning and flood forecasting centers, water quality laboratories, and initiatives to combat aquatic weeds.

According to the statement, more than 1,650 specialists from 52 African countries have benefited from Egyptian training programs in water management and related fields, with total investments reaching approximately $100 million.

The ministers reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to equitable and cooperative management of Nile water resources, calling for adherence to international legal frameworks as the basis for resolving disputes and achieving shared development goals.
