Egypt has rejected any threats to international navigation or attempts to disrupt it, warning of the impact on global trade and energy security, its envoy to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) said.
Speaking during a late Monday session on the Strait of Hormuz, Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Osama Abdel Khalek, said freedom of navigation in international waterways must not be infringed.
“Freedom of navigation in international passages is a well-established principle of international law and must not be compromised under any circumstances,” he said, according to a statement of Egypt’s remarks.
Abdel Khalek affairmed that safeguarding maritime routes is essential for maintaining the stability of global trade and ensuring energy security, noting the heavy reliance of the global economy on key shipping lanes.
He also noted that the continued stability of navigation in vital corridors, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, is an urgent necessity for the international community given its role in the transport of goods and energy supplies.
The Egyptian diplomat further called for intensified international efforts to secure maritime routes and enhance cooperation among concerned states, in a bid to prevent escalation and protect shared interests.
