Counselor Ahmed Hafez, a spokesman for Egypt's Foreign Ministry, said that Egypt rejected statements of Abiy Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of Ethiopia on intending to build a number of dams in various parts of the country.
Hafez asserted that this statement unveils the bad faith of Ethiopia and its treatment with the Nile River and other rivers shared with the neighboring countries as internal rivers under its sovereignty and employed to serve its interests only.
He added that Egypt had recognized the rights of all countries to construct water projects to utilize the resources of the Nile River to attain development to their brotherly peoples.
He stressed that such projects must be built after counseling and coordination with countries that may be affected by those projects, in front of them are those of the upstream countries.
He pointed out that the statements of the Ethiopian Premier reflect the ongoing sorrowful method adopted by Ethiopia that discards the binding rules of the international law which organize the utility of international rivers.
International law compels Ethiopia to respect the rights of the neighboring countries and not to harm the interests of these countries.
