Egypt records 656 new coronavirus cases, 51 fatalities

On Thursday, Egypt reported 656 new coronavirus cases, bringing its total infections tally to 176,333 since the outbreak last year, read a statement released by the country's Ministry of Health.

The statement also reported 51 new deaths, bringing overall fatalities from the virus to 10,201.

As many as 409 patients have been discharged from hospitals over the past 24 hours, pushing the total recoveries to 136,490, the statement added.

Despite Egypt entering the second wave of the pandemic in early December, the country witnessed a decline in the daily infection rate in January before fluctuating up and down since last week.

Starting Saturday, medical staff at hospitals nationwide — that are not designated for coronavirus treatment — and patients with chronic diseases will be administered the coronavirus vaccines.

Egypt has vaccinated hundreds of medical staffers at coronavirus isolation and triage hospitals nationwide as a first step in the country's vaccination campaign, which kicked off in mid-January.
