Egypt has reiterated its support for Syria’s reconstruction efforts as part of broader efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and contain rising regional tensions.
According to a statement recently issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a phone call on Thursday with his Syrian counterpart Asaad Al-Shaibani, during which both sides discussed cooperation and the latest developments in the Middle East.
The call comes at a time of rapidly evolving regional dynamics, particularly in light of recent escalation linked to Iran and ongoing tensions involving Israel.
During the conversation, the two ministers reviewed avenues to expand cooperation across several sectors, with a particular focus on trade and economic engagement. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of building on the outcomes of a recent visit by an Egyptian economic delegation to Damascus, and following up on its results to serve the mutual interests of both countries.
That visit brought together representatives from key industries, including construction, energy, pharmaceuticals, and infrastructure, and explored opportunities for Egyptian participation in Syria’s post-war reconstruction, especially in housing, electricity networks, and essential services.
Beyond bilateral ties, discussions also addressed what both sides described as a “serious escalation” in the region. The ministers reviewed ongoing Egyptian and regional efforts aimed at de-escalation and preventing further deterioration.
The talks further touched on developments in the Palestinian issue and the situation in Lebanon, where Abdelatty reiterated Cairo’s strong condemnation of ongoing Israeli actions, including military operations in southern Lebanon.
He affirmed Egypt’s rejection of what he described as “blatant violations” of the sovereignty of both Lebanon and Syria, warning that continued escalation poses significant risks to regional peace and stability.
Earlier, Egypt had warned of the potential for the Middle East to slide into greater instability following Israeli strikes targeting infrastructure in southern Syria. Cairo also called for the immediate and full withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Syrian territory, urging compliance with international resolutions.
Egyptian officials have increasingly signaled their intention to play a role in Syria’s reconstruction, leveraging national construction firms and state-backed companies to contribute to large-scale rebuilding projects, while also seeking to boost bilateral trade and private-sector partnerships between the two countries.
