Egypt reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s unity and sovereignty and rejected any steps that could undermine its territorial integrity, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said during talks with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, following directives from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, the Egyptian foreign ministry said.

Abdelatty affirmed Egypt’s “categorical rejection” of unilateral measures that could infringe on Somalia’s sovereignty, and condemned Israel’s reported recognition of Somaliland and appointment of a diplomatic envoy, calling it a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.

He said Egypt remained committed to supporting Somalia politically, militarily and economically, describing the country’s stability as vital to the Horn of Africa and closely linked to Egypt’s national security.

Mohamud expressed appreciation for Egypt’s support and said Somalia was keen to deepen cooperation, according to the statement.

Abdelatty pointed to growing bilateral ties, including the launch of a direct EgyptAir route, a military cooperation agreement signed in August 2024, and the relocation of Egypt’s embassy to Mogadishu.

He also called for increased trade and investment, particularly in pharmaceuticals and industrial goods, and affairmed the need for sustained funding for the African Union mission in Somalia, which Egypt is expected to join.
