Egypt Post Provides Cards for Subsidized Bread outside Ration System

Hatem El-Souly, a spokesman for the Postal Authority (Egypt Post) revealed on Tuesday the steps for obtaining a postcard to be able to purchase subsidized bread for those outside the ration card.

El-Souly explained, during a call-in with TV presenter Lamees Al-Hadid, that there is a new mechanism for extending the line to benefit from subsidized bread outside the subsidy system.

He pointed out that the mechanism will work through the Postal Authority, using direct debit cards and prepaid cards to benefit from the support system.

He added, “Whoever has an account with the Postal Authority and a regular card can use it directly to benefit from a subsidized bread.”

He continued: “Whoever does not have an account has two options: either open an account and obtain a card, or have a prepaid card issued, and the cost of issuing it is only EGP 30, paid once and received immediately.”

He revealed that the cards are available in all post offices throughout the country. "It is a system that already exists. We have about 16 million customers."

He stressed that the new system for bread is now under testing with the Ministry of Supply, the Ministry of Communications and the concerned authorities, revealing that the new system will be announced after its completion.

The ministry has not officially determined yet, and the price of bread, however, it will be lower than the price of free "tourist" one in the markets. It is expected that the price of a loaf of bread in the prepaid smart card will be 90 piasters for non-ration card holders.

Meantime, the Bakeries Division said That the price of bread outside the ration card ranges between 60 and 75 piasters for postal card holders.
