Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, met on Monday with Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, at the Arab League’s headquarters.

The meeting was held to congratulate Fahmy after he officially assumed his duties on 1 July, following the unanimous approval of Arab states to appoint him as Secretary-General of the Arab League.

Abdelatty said the unanimous Arab approval of Fahmy’s appointment reflects the full confidence of Arab countries in his distinguished diplomatic experience and capabilities.

The Foreign Minister wished Fahmy success in carrying out the responsibilities of his new post.

Abdelatty stressed Egypt’s keenness to provide full support to the Secretary-General and to his vision for developing the mechanisms of joint Arab action within the Arab League, particularly in the political, economic and social fields.

He said the Arab League plays a central role as the main framework for joint Arab action, stressing the importance of activating coordination and cooperation mechanisms among Arab states in a way that serves shared Arab interests.

The Foreign Minister said the political, security, economic and social challenges facing Arab countries require unity and solidarity within the framework of the Arab League.

He added that these common challenges and threats cannot be addressed by any single country alone, renewing the full support of Egypt’s leadership for the Secretary-General as he carries out his duties.

The meeting also addressed major regional developments, including the Palestinian issue, the situations in Lebanon, Sudan and Libya, and the latest developments in the negotiation track between the United States and Iran.

For his part, Fahmy expressed appreciation for the Foreign Minister’s visit.

He said he valued the confidence placed in him by Egypt’s leadership and by Arab countries, which unanimously chose him for the post.

Fahmy stressed his keenness to work in close coordination with member states to strengthen the system of joint Arab action and develop the performance of the Arab League.

He said this would allow the organisation to keep pace with regional and international challenges, support security and stability, and help achieve the aspirations of Arab peoples.
