President Abdel Fattah El Sisi sent messages to Arab leaders to express Egypt's intention to re-nominate Ahmed Aboul Gheit as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States for the second term of five years, according to Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady.

Rady added that Sisi looked forward to the Arab leaders' support for this nomination in accordance with the provisions of the League Charter.

The official spokesman noted that the re-nomination of the Secretary-General, Aboul-Gheit for a second term, comes within the framework of the great interest that Egypt, under the leadership of Sisi, attaches to the work of the Arab League.

“The Egyptian president is keen to provide all possible support to the Arab League which embraces all the Arabs and embodies their aspirations in a collective work aiming to serve the Arab peoples and interests,” Rady added.

He stressed that Aboul Gheit’s first time as the LAS’s Secretary-General was characterized with conscious and wise management during a challenging phase in the Arab region.

Aboul Gheit was nominated by Egypt for the position in 2016, succeeding the former Egyptian secretary-general Nabil El-Arbi.

Aboul Gheit served as Egypt’s foreign minister from July 2004 till March 2011. Since the founding of the Arab League in 1945, the position of secretary-general has been held by Egypt, except for the period from 1979 to 1990, when the post went to Tunisia.

It's noteworthy that seven Egyptian foreign ministers have assumed that office.
