Egypt launched on Wednesday an airlift to send medical supplies needed to treat victims of Tuesday's massive blast in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, according to the Egyptian Ambassador to Lebanon Yasser Allawi.

"Egypt decided to send a number of medical teams to join the efforts of the Egyptian field hospital in Beirut that already started receiving victims," Allawi was quoted by the Egyptian Embassy in Beirut's official page on Facebook as saying.

On Tuesday, a blaze at Beirut Port turned shortly after into a huge explosion with a huge mushroom cloud that Lebanese officials said came from a stockpile of over 2,750 kilograms of ammonium nitrate in a warehouse at the port.

The blast resulted in the death of more than 113 people, injuring more than 4,000, according to Lebanon's Red Cross.

The diplomat said the assistance comes in the implementation of political leadership's directives to send urgent assistance to the brotherly country and stand by the Lebanese people until it overcomes such a shocking catastrophe.

"The aid is sent by the Egyptian government, Al Azhar, and a number of Egyptian societies, a move that reflects Cairo's official and popular solidarity with the Lebanese people during their current ordeal," he added.
