Egypt has launched the second phase of its Universal Health Insurance System in Minya governorate, while authorities also studying the inclusion of Alexandria as part of plans to expand nationwide health coverage, the head of the General Authority for Healthcare said.

Ahmed el-Sobky told MENA that the new phase, which began on June 1, will also cover Matrouh, Kafr El-Sheikh, Damietta and North Sinai, marking a significant step toward providing comprehensive healthcare services to all citizens.

El-Sobky said trial operations have started in Minya across 60 primary healthcare units and more than 10 hospitals following infrastructure upgrades carried out in cooperation with the health ministry.

He described Minya as one of the most challenging governorates to implement the system due to its large geographical area and population of nearly seven million people.

The experience gained during the first phase of the scheme will support the successful rollout of the second phase, he said, adding that the system aims to deliver healthcare services in line with international standards and improve the quality of care provided to citizens.
