Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate phone calls with his Italian and German counterparts to discuss efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region, stressing the importance of diplomacy amid ongoing developments.

During the discussions with Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Abdelatty expressed hope that upcoming negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad would yield positive results and contribute to easing tensions.

The talks followed the announcement of a ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, alongside plans for negotiations between the two sides. Abdelatty emphasised the need to build on the ceasefire as a key foundation for broader de-escalation efforts.

He also briefed his counterparts on Egypt’s recent diplomatic efforts to contain regional tensions in close coordination with international and regional partners, stressing that dialogue and negotiations remain the top priority at this critical stage.

The ministers exchanged views on developments in Lebanon, where Abdelatty condemned Israeli strikes targeting multiple areas, describing them as a serious escalation and a clear violation of international law. He called for an immediate halt to the attacks and urged the international community, including the European Union, to step up pressure to stop the escalation.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, expressing Cairo’s solidarity with the Lebanese people.

In this context, the ministers welcomed planned talks in Washington between Lebanese and Israeli sides as a step toward opening direct negotiation channels aimed at halting hostilities.

The Egyptian minister also highlighted ongoing contacts with U.S. and Lebanese officials, welcoming a decision announced by Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to restrict arms to state institutions.

Italy and Germany praised Egypt’s constructive role in recent efforts to de-escalate tensions, with all sides agreeing to maintain close coordination and intensify diplomatic engagement in the coming period.
