Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ihab Awad, stated that Israel's recognition of the so-called "Somaliland" spreads instability in the region and poses a genuine threat to international peace and security.
Speaking during a UN Security Council session addressing the issue, Awad highlighted that the Council had reaffirmed its support for Somalia just this month.
With the backing of the United Kingdom (UK), the Council extended the sanctions regime against Al-Shabaab and renewed the mandate of the African Union mission, aiming to bolster Somali state-building, reconstruction, and development efforts.
The Ambassador pointed out that Israel's unilateral move undermines these collective international efforts.
He also stressed that it contradicts the long-standing approach adopted by the Security Council for decades, which is based on upholding the unity and sovereignty of Somalia over its entire territory.
"Somalia is facing new and unprecedented challenges, and we expect a widening scope of international rejection toward actions that oppose Somali interests in light of recent developments," Awad stated.
Moreover, Awad clarified that the security and stability of Somalia are a direct extension of Egypt’s own national security.
He warned that any steps fueling unrest do not only threaten the internal Somali situation but risk destabilizing the entire region.
In conclusion, the Egyptian representative called upon the Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities in addressing the repercussions of the Israeli move.
Furthermore, he urged the Council to send a clear, unambiguous message: Somalia's unity and sovereignty are inviolable under any pretext.
