The Egyptian resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh is preparing to host high-level meetings between delegations from Israel and Hamas to discuss implementing the U.S. peace plan proposed by former President Donald Trump.

The talks come amid escalating regional tensions, with both sides expressing cautious optimism that the dialogue could pave the way for de-escalation and renewed political engagement.

According to Extra News, the Israeli delegation is led by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, while the Hamas delegation, headed by senior political leader Khalil al-Hayya, arrived in Egypt on Sunday. Al-Hayya’s participation carries symbolic importance following a previous assassination attempt against him in Doha.

The discussions are being attended by Egyptian and Qatari mediators, while U.S. representatives — including former presidential adviser Jared Kushner and envoy Steve Kuff — are expected to join later once technical arrangements are completed.

Diplomatic observers describe the atmosphere as one of “cautious optimism,” noting the strong regional and international support surrounding the talks. The meetings draw historical parallels to previous milestones in the Middle East peace process, such as the 1991 Madrid Conference and the 1993 Oslo Accords, which opened the door to direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

Sharm El-Sheikh, often referred to as the “City of Peace,” has a long-standing legacy as a venue for peace efforts concerning the Palestinian issue. The city previously hosted the 1996 “Peacemakers Conference” and numerous subsequent negotiations aimed at fostering dialogue and stability in the region.

Egypt continues to play a leading mediating role, employing its diplomatic, political, and humanitarian channels to advance progress. Egyptian authorities and civil society groups remain actively involved in supporting efforts to promote peace and ease the humanitarian situation in Palestinian territories.

The outcome of the Sharm El-Sheikh talks will be closely monitored across the region, amid hopes they could mark a renewed step toward reviving stalled peace efforts and reducing tensions between Israel and Hamas.
