Egypt Hosts 5th Regional Meeting for Heads of Copyright Offices

In cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Egypt hosted the Fifth Regional Meeting for the Heads of Copyright Offices.

The event aimed at playing a leading role in establishing a balanced and effective international system for the preservation of intellectual property rights.

Dr. Enas Abdel Dayem, Minister of Culture, said that hosting the fifth regional meeting for the heads of copyright offices is an affirmation of Egypt's leading role and it comes from its civilized status regionally and internationally.

Abdel Dayem pointed that the preservation of intellectual property rights, including: innovations, scientific inventions, literary and artistic works, designs and other fields, is one of the most important ways to encourage creativity in various forms.

It is worthy of note that WIPO is one of the United Nations organizations and it works to cement cooperation with its Member: governmental international organizations, non-governmental organizations and the entrepreneurial sector around the world to share the benefits of copyright preservation system.

The 5th Regional Meeting for the Heads of Copyright Offices in the Arab Region was held in Cairo on 9 and 10 November.

It tackled several topics including: the latest technologies and the current situation from a national perspective, the potential of cultural and creative industries in the Arab world, challenges and opportunities, key elements of success in the musical industry, key elements of success in the audiovisual industries, key elements of success in the field of printing and publishing, as well as discussing an active plan to improve copyright systems in the Arab countries,

In addition, the Egyptian delegation was headed by Dr. Hisham Azmi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Culture, Dr. Ashraf Zaki, Head of the Academy of Arts, Dr. Anwar Megheith, Head of the National Center for Translation, Dr. Haitham El-Hajj, Head of the General organization of Book, and Mohamed Farouk, Assistant Legal councilor of the Minister of Culture.

In addition, WIPO members delivered speeches; they include Sylvie Forbán, the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization, Shirin Grace, member of the Organization and Mohamed El Habbal, Assistant Program Officer.

It also included other WIPO members from Hungary, France, Lebanon, Jordan and a number of international organizations working in this area such as the League of Arab States, the International Publishers Association, and the World Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations.

This meeting will be followed by a workshop on 11 and 12 November to discuss these issues with the participation of a large number of intellectual property and copyright officials in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

It is worthy of note that WIPO is the global forum for IP services, public policy, cooperation and information, with the membership of 192 Member States. It was established in 1967 to assist governments and inpiduals in using IP for economic development and public-private partnerships to overcome the global challenges and create universal infrastructure for intellectual property.
