Egypt's U23 football team managed to hold Spain to a goalless draw in their opening game at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Throughout the 90-minute game, Egypt played with a defensive technique against the Spaniards, with few successful offensive chances.

Meanwhile, Spain played a largely offensive match but failed to score against Egypt, with impressive performances from goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy and defender and the team's captain Ahmed Hegazy.

Egypt and Spain now both have one point each in Group C as a result of the draw.

Egypt will next face Argentina on 25 July at 4:30 PM Tokyo time, before facing Australia on 28 July at 8:00 PM Tokyo time.

Participating in the games since 1912, the Egyptian Olympic Committee has 29 medals: seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze. However, none of them are soccer medals.
