Egypt’s cabinet media center has highlighted the country’s efforts to expand food industries and strengthen food security, while showcasing Egyptian food products that have gained a growing presence in global export markets.
The announcement was made by the Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC), affiliated with the Egyptian Cabinet, as part of its efforts to shed light on government initiatives supporting the sector and its contribution to economic growth.
According to Osama El-Gohary, Assistant to the Prime Minister and head of the center, Egypt places the development of food industries at the top of its priorities as part of broader efforts to achieve sustainable food security.
El-Gohary said expanding the food industry helps increase the supply of various commodities in the market with high quality and reasonable prices. He added that Egyptian food industries have gained a growing share within the country’s export structure and have succeeded in opening several new international markets in recent years.
He also affirmed that the Egyptian government has succeeded in building a strategic reserve of key commodities that can cover several months, ensuring the country’s food security amid ongoing regional crises and conflicts.
"The reserves help maintain the availability of essential goods in local markets without disruptions," he noted.
In the same connection, El-Gohary pointed to several agricultural and industrial projects launched in recent years that have boosted production and food processing exports. Among them are the New Delta Project, agricultural expansions in Toshka, and developments in East Oweinat. These initiatives have helped stabilize grain supplies, particularly wheat and corn, in addition to increasing vegetable production.
The government has also supported private sector participation to expand domestic manufacturing and increase exports of processed food products.
According to the center, Egypt’s food industry recorded strong performance during the first ten months of 2025, with exports exceeding $5.8 bn, compared with about $5.2 bn during the same period in 2024. The sector achieved 11 percent growth, equivalent to an increase of around $570 mn.
Several food industries witnessed notable growth over the past year, including frozen strawberries, edible oils, cereal preparations and biscuits, frozen vegetables, chocolate, pasta, and processed cheese.
One of the sector’s success stories is the growing tomato processing industry. Tomatoes rank among Egypt’s top ten export crops, with exports in 2025 surpassing 67,000 tons. Cultivated areas exceeded 367,000 feddans, producing about 7.1 mn.
The expansion in tomato cultivation has fueled growth in related industries such as tomato paste, concentrates, and dried tomatoes. The Upper Egypt Development Authority has also established a food processing and packaging complex in Luxor, which has become one of Egypt’s main centers for producing tomato concentrates and dried tomatoes.
These products are exported in large quantities, generating more than $100 mn annually, according to the center.
