Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, held talks on Sunday with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, as part of ongoing consultations between Cairo and Paris on regional developments.
According to Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ambassador Tameem Khallaf, the two ministers reviewed the situation in Lebanon. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s firm position rejecting any violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. He stressed Egypt’s support for Lebanon’s national institutions in fulfilling their responsibilities to preserve security and stability, and underlined the need for coordinated regional and international efforts to prevent escalation and contain tensions.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister also praised France’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause. He emphasised the importance of implementing the latest UN Security Council resolution on Gaza and enabling international stabilisation forces to carry out their mandate. Abdelatty welcomed an active French role in the upcoming International Conference on Early Recovery and Reconstruction of Gaza, which Egypt will host.
Turning to Sudan, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s unwavering position in support of Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions. He firmly rejected any attempts to divide the country or undermine its stability. He called for concerted international efforts to secure a nationwide ceasefire, launch a credible political process, and ensure safe humanitarian corridors and protection zones for the delivery of aid without obstruction. He also outlined Egypt’s work within the Quad Mechanism to support de-escalation.
Iran Nuclear File: De-escalation and Return to Diplomacy
The Foreign Minister stressed the importance of continuing efforts to lower tensions, rebuild confidence, and create conditions conducive to reviving diplomatic negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme—one that addresses the interests of all parties and contributes to broader regional stability.
Bilateral Relations: Strategic Partnership and Expanding Cooperation
On bilateral ties, both ministers welcomed the growing momentum in Egypt–France relations, noting the recent upgrading of relations to a strategic partnership. They highlighted the rising levels of trade between the two countries and expanding cooperation in economic, investment, development, cultural, and educational fields.
