On Monday, the Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian discussed in a phone call some regional files, topped by the latest developments in Libya, Palestine, and Lebanon.

The call comes as part of coordination between Cairo and Paris, Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Ahmed Hafez said.

During the talks,  the two top diplomats welcomed the ceasefire declarations and the halt of military operations in all Libyan territories, saying that it is an attempt to reach a political settlement, paving the way to restoring stability and peace in the war-torn country as well as countering the militant groups and stopping all foreign interference in the Arab country’s affairs.

The Government of National Accord (GNA), which is based in the west of the country, announced on Friday morning a ceasefire across the country. It also called for the demilitarisation of the contested strategic cities of Sirte and Al-Jufrah, which are controlled by the Libyan National Army.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron called for the need to enforce the arms embargo imposed on Libya, said in a tweet: “The European IRINI mission, in order to enforce the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations on Libya, must be strengthened.”

Macron has previously spoke with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, on August 14, about the situation in the eastern Mediterranean, Libya, and Lebanon, pointing to the convergence of their views on these issues.

Tackling the Palestinian cause, Shoukry and Le Drian stressed the importance of sticking to the two-state solution and supporting efforts aimed at reaching a fair peace settlement in line with international resolutions.

Speaking about the Lebanese crisis, they probed ways to support the country to get out of its quagmire.

Both ministers also highlighted the importance of intensifying joint efforts to provide support to the Lebanese people and serve the country’s higher interests.
