Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held talks with Amy Pope to discuss the root causes of migration, support for host countries, and ongoing efforts to address regional conflicts impacting displacement and global stability.

During the meeting, Pope highlighted that conflict, climate change, and lack of economic opportunities remain the primary drivers of migration worldwide. She pointed to the crisis in Sudan as a key example of how instability continues to force people to flee their homes.

Pope affairmed the importance of establishing safe and legal migration pathways and enhancing labor mobility across Africa, noting that such measures would benefit both migrants and host countries. She also praised Egypt for its leading diplomatic role in unifying the African position ahead of the upcoming International Migration Review Forum scheduled for May.

In turn, Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, noting that Cairo is working intensively to reach a ceasefire amid current conflicts. He referred to a recent quadrilateral meeting with his counterparts from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey held in Islamabad.

The four countries, he said, collectively condemned recent Iranian attacks targeting Gulf states as well as Jordan and Iraq, describing them as unacceptable and urging Iran to refrain from targeting neighboring countries.

Abdelatty added that Egypt is working to bridge gaps between parties and put forward proposals aimed at reaching a comprehensive agreement that addresses the concerns of all sides. He warned that the ongoing conflict continues to disrupt global supply chains and international navigation, underscoring the need to uphold international law and ensure maritime freedom.

On the issue of migration, Pope emphasized that no single country can handle the burden alone, calling on the international community to increase support for host nations. She noted that Egypt currently hosts more than 10 million migrants and refugees and commended its approach of integrating them into society rather than placing them in camps.

Pope reaffirmed her organization’s commitment to mobilizing greater international assistance to support Egypt and other host countries facing mounting migration pressures.
