Egypt's Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir said on Friday that stronger cooperation with Turkey could support regional development through joint port projects, cross-border railway links and new logistics corridors.

Speaking at a ministerial dialogue during the 5th Turkish Maritime Summit alongside Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, El-Wazir said closer cooperation could boost regional trade and improve market access, according to Egypt's transport ministry.

El-Wazir said Egypt aims to become a regional hub for transport, logistics and transit trade, expanding its role beyond serving as a major route for global commerce.

He said Egypt has implemented a programme to develop its multimodal transport network, including eight international logistics corridors intended to strengthen links with the Gulf, the Levant, and North and Central Africa, with connections to European and Asian markets.

The minister also highlighted plans to facilitate trade between Europe and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries through the North Arabian Trade Corridor and the South Arabian Trade Corridor.

El-Wazir said Egypt is also seeking to integrate its transport network with international initiatives, including the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and China's Belt and Road Initiative.

He said Egypt was investing in modernising its transport infrastructure by developing smart logistics hubs at ports, expanding domestic maritime industries, supporting greener shipping and updating legislation governing the port sector, according to the ministry.
