Egypt Exports to COMESA Increased 10.9% to $3.4 Billion

A recent report issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) revealed the value of Egyptian exports to COMESA countries recorded $3.4 billion in 2022, compared to $3.1 billion in 2021, an increase of 10.9%.

The report added that the volume of Egyptian imports from COMESA countries to Egypt amounted to $1.9 billion in 2022, compared to $1.3 billion in 2021, an increase of 42.4%.

The Statistics Authority indicated that the value of trade exchange between Egypt and the COMESA countries increased to reach $5.3 billion in 2022, compared to $4.4 billion in 2021, an increase of 20.4%.

Libya topped the list of the top ten COMESA countries importing from Egypt during the year 2022; as the value of Egypt’s exports amounted to $1.2 billion, followed by Sudan at $929.2 million, Kenya at $355.7 million, Tunisia at $307.5 million, Djibouti at $113.2 million, Uganda at $108.2 million, Ethiopia at $103.1 million, Madagascar at $79.9 million, then Rwanda at $55.2 million, and finally Somalia $40.5 million.

The most important commodity groups that Egypt exported to the COMESA countries during the year 2022, topped by chemical and plastic products with a value of $1.1 billion, animal and plant products with a value of $782.3 million, and manufactures of marble, stones, porcelain and glass with a value of $267.7 million.

Fuel and petroleum products came in fourth place with a value of $208.6 million, then mineral products with a value of $207.6 million, then threads, textile fibers and spinning and weaving products with a value of $205.8 million, machinery and mechanical and electrical appliances with a value of $198.9 million, and rubber, leather and timber with a value of $179.4 million, and finally scientific equipment worth $10.7 million.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo came at the top of the list of the top ten COMESA countries in terms of exports to Egypt during the year 2022; as the value of Egypt’s imports amounted to $524.5 million, followed by Sudan at $504.4 million, Zambia at $313.7 million, Kenya at $307.9 million, Libya at $89.2 million, Tunisia at $71.3 million, Uganda at $23.2 million, Malawi at $10 million, then Zimbabwe at $9.3 million, and finally Djibouti at $8.7 million.

The report clarified the most important commodity groups that Egypt imported from the COMESA countries during 2022, where mineral products topped the list to record $908.9 million, animal and plant products amounted to $709.2 million, and yarns, textile fibers, and spinning and weaving products amounted to $144.6 million.

In fourth place came chemical and plastic products with a value of $51.1 million, rubber, leather and wood with a value of $18.9 million, machinery and electrical appliances with a value of $15 million, marble, stone, porcelain and glass manufactures with a value of $12.6 million, scientific equipment with a value of $0.7 million, and fuel and petroleum products with a value of $0.1 million.
