Egypt has taken a new step in expanding its natural gas production, with the arrival of the drilling ship Valaris DS-12 in its territorial waters to begin a fresh phase of offshore exploration in the Mediterranean.

The rig will start operations as part of a program to drill four new gas wells in cooperation with major international partners, including BP and Arcius Energy.

According to the plan, the vessel will first drill one production well and one exploratory well for BP, followed by two additional exploratory wells for Arcius Energy—a joint venture between BP and Abu Dhabi’s ADNOC.

The move reflects growing confidence among global energy companies in Egypt’s investment climate in the petroleum sector, particularly following a series of incentives introduced by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to boost exploration and production activities.

Egypt is pursuing an ambitious strategy in 2026 aimed at drilling more than 100 exploratory wells, alongside the development of existing fields. The plan is designed to maximize the country’s oil and gas resources and support new discoveries that could strengthen national output.

Officials see the latest exploration activities as a cornerstone for achieving gradual and sustainable increases in domestic production, with the potential to significantly reshape Egypt’s energy landscape over the next five years.
